Fernandez Honda honored for 2nd year in a row as Best Dealership to Work For


You rarely see a $2 bill these days, except at Fernandez Honda in San Antonio and the five other Mike Shaw Automotive stores.

With good reviews so important in the age of Internet car shopping, Fernandez Honda believes they are worth celebrating. "Fernandez Honda hands them out to employees who get outstanding online reviews from customers. Years ago, we started by giving them to employees for complimentary letters that customers sent to us but, with all the technology available today, a great review on Dealerrater, Yelp or Google can be seen by thousands of people." said Adam Claiborne, General Manager.

Owner, Mike Shaw, started the tradition of giving out $2 bills in 1994 at another one of his stores. All stores still participate in the honors, Shaw said.

Fernandez Honda has other awards to honor employee achievement as well. Each quarter, the store caters a luncheon to celebrate employee birthdays and career anniversaries and to praise recent accomplishments in all departments. "The luncheon is a great way to communicate with employees, hear their views and congratulate them on a job well done", Claiborne said. They also have a rewards for exemplary performance among the staff; $100 gift card is given to the employee of the month as voted by all 64 employees, as well as $50 to the top Salesperson, Technician and Service Advisor each month.

Fernandez Honda also annually brings a wellness group to the store to offer employees the convenience of a medical checkup on premises; and during flu season, provide a free flu shot to all interested employees right at the dealership. Said Claiborne: "Employees appreciate it because it's hard to find time for medical concerns when they're taking care of their families and working."

Fernandez Honda has some of the best staff-retention rates in the country and recently had the opportunity to promote a long time employee as their new Internet Director and another to a General Sales Manager position. "We like to promote from within whenever possible to keep our employees striving for the next step in their careers", says Claiborne. "We also try to get the word out that this is not only a company that you can start a lifelong career with, but that we also have fun and care about each other like a family. We are extremely proud to be a 2nd time recipient of Automotive News' Best Dealerships To Work For award because it shows that our employees love where they work."
